Phillips (John) is born in Boston.
November 26, 1770
The son of William and Margaret (Wendell) Phillips, John Phillips is born at his family’s estate near today’s 450 Washington Street (then 39), graduates from Harvard College, and becomes a lawyer. He marries Sally Walley in 1994, and becomes Town Advocate (prosecutor) of the newly-established Boston Municipal Court in 1800. Phillips serves in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1803) and Senate (1804-23), the last ten years as senate president, and as mayor of Boston (1822). He builds a new home on Beacon Street in 1804,* and dies there on May 29, 1823.
